Introduction of Phased Array OLYMPUS OmniScan SX

At Civil Tech, we have introduced the OLYMPUS OmniScan SX, which is used for phased array ultrasonic testing (UT), a method increasingly being adopted in non-destructive testing. Phased array ultrasonic testing is a type of ultrasonic inspection that uses multiple ultrasonic elements and electronically generated time delays to create beams, allowing for accurate and rapid inspections. The OLYMPUS OmniScan SX enables electronic steering, scanning, sweeping, and focusing, making inspections faster, allowing for the storage of all data, and enabling examinations at a wide range of viewing angles.

Phased array technology refers to an ultrasonic probe that is composed of multiple transducers, in contrast to conventional probes that typically consist of a single transducer (piezoelectric element). Each individual transducer can independently control the timing of transmitting and receiving ultrasound, forming a synthesized ultrasonic wavefront to control the ultrasonic beam. This allows the inspection to be performed by freely changing the incident angle and focal distance of the ultrasound, enabling work in narrow areas that were difficult to detect with conventional ultrasonic testing methods. Additionally, since the inspection results can be evaluated and confirmed through images, it becomes easy to check the location, size, and shape of defects, as well as to obtain a comprehensive overview.
